The piece

Katana by Naminohira Yasuhiro of Satsuma province, around the Kan'en era (1748–1751), signed, with NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon papers and kept in shirasaya.

Katana by Naminohira Yasuhiro, a smith of the Naminohira school of Satsuma province, active around the Kan'en era (1748–1751). According to the original seller, he was the grandson of Yamato no Kami Yasuyuki, who studied the Sōshū tradition by order of the lord Shimazu Mitsuhisa, and he forged this blade at the request of a samurai of the Jigen-ryū school of swordsmanship. It measures 72.8 cm in nagasa with 1.27 cm of sori: a long blade with restrained curvature, a small kissaki and a strong shinogi. The photographs show a notare-based hamon with a bright edge; according to the original seller, the jigane is a tight ko-mokume with chikei and abundant ji-nie, the hamon carries lines of nie, the temper begins above the machi and the bōshi turns back in ko-maru. The tang, which the photographs show intact with a single mekugi-ana, bears higaki file marks according to the seller and is signed 波平安廣 (Naminohira Yasuhiro). It keeps a gold-foiled double habaki and, according to the listing, is stored in shirasaya; there is no koshirae. The original seller states NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken papers and a 1980 (Shōwa 55) Tokyo registration.

The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
