The piece
Shintō katana from Hizen signed by Ise Daijō Yoshihiro, a pupil of the first Tadayoshi, with an ubu tang, suguha hamon and NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper, in shirasaya.
Ise Daijō Yoshihiro worked in Hizen province within the Tadayoshi school: according to the original seller, he was a pupil of the first Tadayoshi, received the title Ise Daijō during the Kanbun era and probably made substitute works (daisaku) for the first and second Tadayoshi. The blade has a nagasa of 69.8 cm with 2.1 cm of sori, a motohaba of 3.11 cm and a sakihaba of 2.27 cm. The original seller describes a well-forged, tight ko-itame jigane and a suguha hamon of thick ko-nie with kinsuji, imozuru and sunagashi. The tang is ubu, with a single mekugi-ana, as the photographs confirm, and bears the signature 肥前国住伊勢大掾藤原吉広 (Hizen no Kuni-jū Ise Daijō Fujiwara Yoshihiro). The piece keeps its shirasaya and comes with an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken paper, which the photographs show issued for this signature. No koshirae is included.

The score adds and subtracts points for each feature of the piece and has no ceiling: the highest in the catalogue today is 255. It is computed from the record, not from an opinion. The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
