The piece

Katana signed by Kunimasa, a pupil of Horikawa Kunihiro, with an ubu tang, designated Jūyō Tōken by the NBTHK at the 19th session (1970). Offered in shirasaya, without mounts.

Katana signed by Kunimasa, a pupil of Horikawa Kunihiro in Kyoto (Yamashiro province) in the early Edo period. According to the original seller, his signed works are extremely rare and his work matches the master's in style, tang finish and signature calligraphy, which is why he is regarded as one of Kunihiro's daisaku smiths (works made in the master's name); some signatures indicate that he later worked in Edo. The blade, shinogi-zukuri with iori-mune, shallow sori and chū-kissaki, measures 70.8 cm in nagasa with 1.1 cm of sori. The Jūyō description records an itame standing out with ji-nie and a notare hamon mixed with gunome, with ashi, deep nioi, ko-nie, sunagashi and faint kinsuji; the bōshi runs straight and turns back in a round tip. The photographs show the ubu tang, with kurijiri tip, ō-sujikai file marks, a single mekugi-ana and the signature 国正 (Kunimasa) below the hole, towards the back. Designated Jūyō Tōken by the NBTHK at the 19th session (1 June 1970); the photographs include certificate no. 3480, reissued in 2021, and the zufu pages. According to the original seller, it comes in shirasaya, without mounts.

The score adds and subtracts points for each feature of the piece and has no ceiling: the highest in the catalogue today is 255. It is computed from the record, not from an opinion. The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
