The piece

Shintō katana signed by Echizen no Kami Hōjōji Tachibana Masateru around the Tenna era, in shirasaya with a sayagaki by Satō Kanzan and NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken papers.

Katana signed on the omote of the tang 越前守法城寺橘正照 (Echizen no Kami Hōjōji Tachibana Masateru). According to the original seller, Masateru was a pupil of Hōjōji Masahiro, founder of the Edo branch of the Hōjōji school, and accompanied him to Mito when Tokugawa Mitsukuni summoned his master to forge there; he later studied under the second generation Iga no Kami Kinmichi, received the title Echizen no Kami with permission to carve the chrysanthemum crest on the tang, and settled in Akita in the service of the Satake house. The seller places the blade around the Tenna era (1681–1684). It measures 75.4 cm in nagasa with 1.81 cm of sori, and the seller describes the Kanbun shintō shape, broad at the base and narrowing towards the point. According to the original seller, the jigane is a tight ko-itame with fine ji-nie, and the hamon a suguha leaning to notare, rich in ko-nie, with yubashiri-like nijūba and sunagashi; the seller presents it as a healthy work reminiscent of Hizen blades. The photographs show a tang that appears intact, with a single mekugi-ana, and a double habaki. It comes in shirasaya with a sayagaki by Satō Kanzan, without mounts, and with NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken papers dated December 2025.

The score adds and subtracts points for each feature of the piece and has no ceiling: the highest in the catalogue today is 255. It is computed from the record, not from an opinion. The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
