The piece
Shinshintō katana by Sadahiro of Dewa province, forged on commission for Satake Yoshizane and dated the 8th month of Bunka 3 (1806), with an ubu tang and declared Tokubetsu Hozon papers.
Katana by Sadahiro, a smith of Yuzawa in Dewa province (Akita) who, according to the original seller, trained under Suishinshi Masahide and worked between the Kyōwa and Bunsei eras. The omote signature, in regular script, reads 蒙 南義良公命 羽陰住貞弘作之 (probable reading: kōmuru Minami Yoshizane-kō mei, Uin-jū Sadahiro kore o saku): the blade was forged on commission for Satake Yoshizane, twelfth head of the Minami branch of the Satake clan, and the inscription leaves a blank space before his name as a mark of respect (ketsuji). The ura bears the date 文化三年八月日 (Bunka sannen hachigatsu hi) in cursive. The blade is wide and robust in kasane, with a moderate wazori and a slightly extended chū-kissaki. According to the original seller, the jigane is a tight ko-itame with ji-nie and chikei recalling the chirimen-hada of Bitchū Aoe, and the hamon a chū-suguha in ko-nie with ko-ashi, with a ko-maru bōshi. The photographs show an ubu tang with keshō-yasuri, kurijiri and a single mekugi-ana. It comes with a gilt one-piece habaki and, according to the listing, in shirasaya; there is no koshirae. The original seller declares NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon papers.

The score adds and subtracts points for each feature of the piece and has no ceiling: the highest in the catalogue today is 255. It is computed from the record, not from an opinion. The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
