The piece
Katana signed and dated 1865 by Hosokawa Masamori: a broad blade with a long kissaki, in an old shirasaya bearing a sayagaki by Satō Kanzan, with declared Tokubetsu Hozon papers.
Katana by Hosokawa Masamori, son and pupil of Hosokawa Masayoshi and, like his father, a smith in the service of the Tsuyama clan (Mimasaka), working in Edo. Signed on the omote 作陽幕下士細川正守 (Sakuyō bakuka no shi Hosokawa Masamori), with the workshop seal, and dated on the ura 元治二歳孟春日造之 (Genji ni-sai mōshun no hi kore o tsukuru), the first month of 1865; according to the original seller, made at the age of 44. A broad, thick blade with moderate sori and a long kissaki, 74.6 cm in nagasa. According to the original seller, the jigane is ko-mokume with fine ji-nie and chikei, and the hamon a chōji-midare of white nie with kinsuji and sunagashi; the photographs show a broad, lively undulating hamon along the whole blade. The seller describes it as very healthy, with few polishes and the original edge preserved above the ha-machi. The tang, with sujikai file marks and two mekugi-ana, appears intact in the photographs. It is kept in an old shirasaya with a sayagaki by Satō Kanzan, who rates it 同作中優品也 (dōsaku-chū yūhin nari), "an outstanding work among his own", and has a gold-foiled double habaki. NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon papers, according to the original seller.

The score adds and subtracts points for each feature of the piece and has no ceiling: the highest in the catalogue today is 255. It is computed from the record, not from an opinion. The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
