The piece

Katana by Hosokawa Masamori dated the 8th month of Bunkyū 3 (1863): a wide, thick blade with an ō-kissaki, in shirasaya, with NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon papers.

Hosokawa Masamori, a smith of the Hosokawa house and retained swordsmith of the Tsuyama domain in Mimasaka, was the son of Hosokawa Masayoshi, a pupil of Suishinshi Masahide, and followed his teaching, working chiefly in the Bizen tradition. This katana, with a nagasa of 77 cm and a sori of 1.4 cm, is in shinogi-zukuri with an iori-mune, wide, thick in kasane and with an ō-kissaki, an imposing late-Edo profile. According to the original seller, the jigane is a tight ko-itame with ji-nie, and the hamon a chōji-midare mixed with gunome, with plentiful ashi and ko-nie; the bōshi runs in midare and turns back in a slightly pointed ko-maru. The photographs show the full blade and a well-defined irregular hamon. The tang is ubu, with sujikai yasurime and keshō-yasuri, a kurijiri tip and a single mekugi-ana; the omote bears the signature 正守 (Masamori) with a stamped seal, and the ura the date 文久三年八月日 (Bunkyū sannen hachigatsu hi). It is kept in shirasaya with its bag and a gold-plated copper habaki. The original seller states an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken certificate issued in 2016 and the Japanese registration.

The score adds and subtracts points for each feature of the piece and has no ceiling: the highest in the catalogue today is 255. It is computed from the record, not from an opinion. The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
