The piece

Katana of the Takada school of Bungo, early Edo period, signed 豊後住国行 (Bungo-jū Kuniyuki), with ubu tang, in shirasaya and with NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon papers.

Katana signed on the tang 豊後住国行 (Bungo-jū Kuniyuki), the work of a smith of the Takada school of Bungo province. According to the original seller, the school arose in Bungo in the Nanbokuchō period, founded by Tomoyuki, and continued into the Shintō period; the seller places this blade in the early Edo period. It is a shinogi-zukuri blade with iori-mune, of fairly generous width, standard kasane, a somewhat high shinogi, balanced sori and chū-kissaki, measuring 69.69 cm in nagasa with 1.51 cm of sori. The original seller describes a well-forged itame jigane mixed with mokume, with ji-nie, chikei and shirake-utsuri, and a ko-gunome hamon with angular and pointed elements, ko-ashi, a tight nioiguchi, ko-nie and fine sunagashi; the bōshi runs straight with a round turn-back and hakikake. The photographs show this irregular gunome hamon along the whole blade. The tang is ubu, with katte-sagari yasurime, kurijiri tip and a single mekugi-ana, as the photographs confirm. It is kept in shirasaya with its bag and a silver-foiled copper habaki, and comes with NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken papers issued in December 2021 and a 1954 registration card. There is no koshirae.

The score adds and subtracts points for each feature of the piece and has no ceiling: the highest in the catalogue today is 255. It is computed from the record, not from an opinion. The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
