The piece
Katana by Oku Yamato no Kami Motohira, dated autumn of Bunka 1 (1804), with a signed ubu tang, NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon papers and published in Shinshintō Taikan.
Katana by Oku Yamato no Kami Motohira, the Satsuma master whom the original seller places, together with Hōki no Kami Masayuki, as one of the two pillars of the province's shinshintō. According to the seller, he was the son of Oku Motonao, received the title Yamato no Kami in 1789 and died in 1826; this 1804 blade would be a work of his maturity. Shinogi-zukuri with iori-mune and chū-kissaki, wide and thick, with koshizori, a nagasa of 69.5 cm and 1.4 cm of sori. The seller describes a well-forged ko-itame with ji-nie and chikei in the manner of matsukawa-hada, and a hamon of ko-notare and gunome with some togariba, deep nie, thick kinsuji and sunagashi; the midare bōshi turns back in ko-maru. The tang is ubu, with sujikai-yasuri and a single mekugi-ana, as the photographs confirm; it is signed 奥大和守平朝臣元平 (Oku Yamato no Kami Taira Ason Motohira) and dated 文化元子秋 (probable reading: Bunka gan ne aki). Double copper habaki with gold foil. NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken papers of 1996. Kept in shirasaya, without mounting. The seller states it is published in Shinshintō Taikan, Shinshintō-shū and Tōken Yōran; the photographs reproduce the Shinshintō Taikan page.

The score adds and subtracts points for each feature of the piece and has no ceiling: the highest in the catalogue today is 255. It is computed from the record, not from an opinion. The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
