The piece

Katana by Kurihara Nobuhide, signed as Chikuzen no Kami and dated in Ōsaka in 1865, with an ubu tang, horimono and a shirasaya bearing a sayagaki by Satō Kanzan.

Katana by Kurihara Nobuhide, the foremost pupil of Minamoto Kiyomaro and one of the great names of shinshintō. According to the original seller, he was born in Echigo, worked as a mirror maker in Kyoto, joined Kiyomaro's workshop in Edo in 1850 and in 1865 received the title Chikuzen no Kami, after which he stayed in Ōsaka until 1867. This blade belongs to that moment: the ubu tang, with a kurijiri tip and a single mekugi-ana, is signed 筑前守信秀於大坂造之 (Chikuzen no Kami Nobuhide Ōsaka ni oite kore o tsukuru) and dated 慶應元年八月日 (Keiō gannen hachigatsu hi), as the photographs show. It is a shinogi-zukuri with a wide mihaba, shallow sori and ōkissaki, with a nagasa of 73.4 cm. The photographs show a bōhi ending in a rounded stop halfway up the blade and, below it, a kurikara on one side and a ken on the other, which the seller describes as carved by the smith himself. According to the seller, the jigane is itame mixed with nagare, with thick jinie and abundant chikei, and the hamon a broad gunome with angular heads mixed with ko-gunome and ko-chōji, plenty of kinsuji and sunagashi and a bright nioiguchi. It is kept in a shirasaya with a sayagaki by Satō Kanzan, with a gold-foiled double habaki. The seller states an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken paper.

The score adds and subtracts points for each feature of the piece and has no ceiling: the highest in the catalogue today is 255. It is computed from the record, not from an opinion. The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
