The piece

Katana by Ishidō Unju Korekazu, seventh master of the Ishidō, dated 1858 and designated Jūyō Tōken by the NBTHK at its 23rd session; in shirasaya with sayagaki.

Katana forged by Ishidō Unju Korekazu, seventh master of the Ishidō house in Edo, known for blades in the Bizen and Sōshū traditions. Shinogi-zukuri blade with iori-mune, a nagasa of 75.8 cm according to the paper, 1.3 cm of sori and a chū-kissaki, with bōhi on both sides. According to the paper and the original seller, the jigane is a tight ko-itame with jinie, and the hamon is a nie-based chōji and gunome midare with sunagashi and kinsuji; the bōshi is straight with a ko-maru. The tang is ubu, with one mekugi-ana, and bears a commission signature: 為大塚一信君 石堂運寿是一精鍛作之 (Ōtsuka Kazunobu-kun no tame Ishidō Unju Korekazu seitan kore o saku); on the ura, 安政五年戊午二月日 (Ansei go-nen tsuchinoe-uma nigatsu hi). Designated Jūyō Tōken at the 23rd NBTHK session on 1 July 1975; the photographs show the certificate and the zufu page. It is kept in shirasaya with a 1975 sayagaki by Satō Kanzan. No koshirae is included.

The score adds and subtracts points for each feature of the piece and has no ceiling: the highest in the catalogue today is 255. It is computed from the record, not from an opinion. The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
