The piece
Signed katana from the Iga no Kami Kinmichi line of the Mishina school of Kyoto, with an ubu tang, a lively chōji hamon and NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon papers. Kept in shirasaya.
Katana from the Iga no Kami Kinmichi house of the Mishina school of Kyoto (Yamashiro province), the family that throughout the Edo period handled the honorary titles granted to swordsmiths by the imperial court. The NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper, issued in 2012, attributes it to the third generation; the original seller places it in the second generation, around the Enpō era. It is shinogi-zukuri with an iori-mune, a wide mihaba, a deep sori of 2.0 cm and a chū-kissaki, with a nagasa of 70.2 cm. According to the original seller, the jigane is itame mixed with mokume and ko-mokume, with fine ji-nie and chikei, and the hamon starts in suguha and opens into chōji with gunome and togariba, abundant ashi and yō, ko-nie with coarser nie in places, niesuji and a bright nioiguchi; the bōshi is hakikake with ko-maru. The photographs show a very active chōji and gunome hamon along the whole blade. The tang is ubu, with an iriyamagata tip, sujikai yasurime and one mekugi-ana, and is signed on the omote 菊紋 伊賀守藤原金道 (kikumon Iga no Kami Fujiwara Kinmichi), with the chrysanthemum engraved above the signature. It is kept in shirasaya, with a double gold-foil habaki, and has no mounting.

The score adds and subtracts points for each feature of the piece and has no ceiling: the highest in the catalogue today is 255. It is computed from the record, not from an opinion. The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
