The piece
Katana by Hamabe Minryūshi Toshizane, smith in the service of the Inaba clan, dated 1817, with ubu tang, NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper, shirasaya and uchigatana-koshirae.
Hamabe Minryūshi Toshizane worked for the Tottori clan in Inaba province and, according to the original seller, was the son of Hamabe Toshinori; his pupil Minryūshi Toshitaka was the teacher of Kiyomaro. The blade, in shinogi-zukuri with an iori-mune, has a nagasa of 71.2 cm and a sori of 1.2 cm. The original seller describes a dense ko-itame jigane mixed with masame, with ji-nie, chikei and utsuri, and a gunome-chōji midare hamon with pointed elements, ashi, yō, tobiyaki, kinsuji and sunagashi; the photographs show the gunome-chōji in the close-ups. The tang is ubu, with one mekugi-ana, signed 因藩臣濱部眠龍子壽実 (Inban-shin Hamabe Minryūshi Toshizane) and dated 文化十四年八月日 (Bunka jūyonen hachigatsu hi), 8th month of 1817. It is kept in shirasaya and comes with an uchigatana-koshirae with a black lacquered saya with diagonal ridges, a round iron tsuba and a black-wrapped tsuka. It holds an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper.
