The piece
Late Muromachi kotō katana signed 冬廣作 (Fuyuhiro saku), with ubu tang, NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper, shirasaya and a koshirae with black lacquered saya.
Katana of the Fuyuhiro school of Wakasa, whose smiths worked in Obama; the original seller attributes it to the third generation of the name and places it in the late Muromachi period. The blade is shinogi-zukuri with iori-mune, 71.5 cm in nagasa with 2.2 cm of sori. According to the original seller, the jigane is itame mixed with mokume, with a pronounced yet well-forged grain, abundant ji-nie, fine chikei and a faint nie-utsuri; the hamon combines notare and gunome with chōji, with a broad, bright nioiguchi and konie, very active ashi and yō, kinsuji and sunagashi. The photographs show the undulating hamon and the grain of the steel. The tang is ubu, with a single mekugi-ana, and bears the signature 冬廣作 (Fuyuhiro saku). It comes with a shirasaya and an uchigatana koshirae with a black roiro lacquered saya, which the seller describes without dating it: an iron tsuba with small piercings, fuchi-kashira and menuki with gold animals, and a green-wrapped tsuka over same. It holds an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken paper.
