The piece

Katana signed 國廣 (Kunihiro), by Horikawa Kunihiro, circa Keichō 7–8 (1602–1603), suriage with the signature preserved, in shirasaya with sayagaki by Satō Kanzan and Tanobe Michihiro.

Katana signed 國廣 (Kunihiro), a work by Horikawa Kunihiro, the smith from Hyūga who founded the Horikawa school in Kyoto at the dawn of the shintō period. The original seller places it around Keichō 7–8 (1602–1603) on the form of the signature, the so-called kata-ochi-mei. The blade measures 65.3 cm in nagasa with 1.09 cm of sori, a chū-kissaki and a crisp shinogi. According to the original seller, it was once about 74 cm long and was shortened by roughly three sun; the two-character signature survives at the tip of the tang, which the photographs show with three mekugi-ana. According to the original seller, the jigane is itame with large mokume, thick ji-nie and abundant chikei; the hamon is chū-suguha in a gentle notare with kinsuji and sunagashi, and the bōshi is midare-komi with a komaru turn-back. It is kept in a shirasaya bearing two sayagaki: one by Dr Satō Kanzan and one by Tanobe Michihiro, who relates it to the style of Sōshū Yukimitsu and praises its chikei and kinsuji. It comes with a gold-foiled double habaki. The original seller declares NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon papers, which do not appear in the photographs. It is offered without koshirae.

The score adds and subtracts points for each feature of the piece and has no ceiling: the highest in the catalogue today is 255. It is computed from the record, not from an opinion. The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
