The piece
Kaga katana signed and dated Ansei 6 (1859) by Ise Daijō Fujiwara Kaneshige, with NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon papers and a complete mounting.
According to the original seller, Kaneshige worked in Kaga province in the service of the Maeda house, descended from the line of Kanemoto of Seki (Mino), was born in 1815, received the title Ise Daijō in Ansei 6 and died in 1862. The blade measures 63.6 cm in nagasa with 1.0 cm of sori, 3.2 cm width at the base and 8 mm kasane. The photographs show an undulating notare hamon and a tang that appears intact, with a single mekugi-ana. Signed on the omote: 加州住木下伊勢大掾藤原兼重 (Kashū-jū Kinoshita Ise Daijō Fujiwara Kaneshige); on the ura, the date 安政六年八月吉日 (Ansei rokunen hachigatsu kichijitsu), the same year he received the title. The NBTHK certified it as 特別保存刀剣 (Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken), paper no. 1023820, issued in Reiwa 6. It comes in a koshirae with blue ito, pale same, a pierced iron tsuba with a dragon, dragon fuchi-kashira and menuki, a black lacquered saya and a silver habaki; the listing neither describes nor dates the mounting.
