The piece
Katana by the first-generation Echizen Yasutsugu, signed in Edo with an added inscription declaring nanban-tetsu steel, ubu tang and NBTHK Jūyō Tōken designation in 1968. Kept in shirasaya.
Katana by the first-generation Echizen Yasutsugu, whom the original seller ranks among the finest shintō smiths and places in the Momoyama period. The blade is shinogi-zukuri with an iori-mune, moderate sori and chū-kissaki, measuring 66.0 cm in nagasa with 1.8 cm of sori. According to the original seller and the designation text, the jigane is itame with some nagare, ji-nie and chikei, and the hamon a gentle notare with gunome, chōji-ashi, sunagashi and ko-nie; the bōshi runs in notare and turns back to a point. The tang is ubu, with a kengata tip, sujichigai yasurime and a single mekugi-ana, as the photographs show. The omote bears the signature 於武州江戸越前康継 (Oite Bushū Edo Echizen Yasutsugu) and the ura the added inscription 以南蛮鉄 (motte nanban-tetsu), declaring the use of imported steel. The NBTHK designated it Jūyō Tōken at its 17th session in July 1968; the designation text notes that it lacks the hollyhock mon often found on the first generation's work, that it is not one of his copies of older blades, and that it is a calm, well-ordered piece. It is kept in shirasaya with a sayagaki; there is no koshirae.

The score adds and subtracts points for each feature of the piece and has no ceiling: the highest in the catalogue today is 255. It is computed from the record, not from an opinion. The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
