The piece
Katana by Koyama Munetsugu dated 1837, in the Bizen tradition, with an ubu tang and designated Jūyō Tōken by the NBTHK. Kept in shirasaya.
Katana by Koyama Munetsugu, the smith born in Shirakawa who worked in Edo for the Kuwana domain and made the Bizen tradition his hallmark in the late Edo period. The blade, shinogi-zukuri with iori-mune and an extended chū-kissaki, is wide, with a thick kasane and restrained curvature (72.7 cm nagasa, 1.8 cm sori), and carries bōhi on both sides. According to the Jūyō Tōken Zufu description, the jigane is a tight ko-itame mixed with mokume and the hamon a chōji-midare with gunome, ko-chōji and ko-gunome, long ashi, sunagashi, kinsuji and a bright nioiguchi; the photographs show the chōji-gunome with pronounced ashi along the whole blade. The tang is ubu, with keshō ō-sujikai yasurime and a single mekugi-ana: the omote bears a commission inscription (chūmon-mei) followed by the smith's long signature, and the ura the date 天保八丁酉年二月日 (Tenpō hachi hinoto-tori no toshi nigatsu hi). The NBTHK designated it Jūyō Tōken at its 49th session (2003); its description counts it among the smith's finest works and calls it healthy and robust. It is kept in shirasaya, with a two-piece habaki covered in gold foil.

The score adds and subtracts points for each feature of the piece and has no ceiling: the highest in the catalogue today is 255. It is computed from the record, not from an opinion. The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
