The piece
Shintō katana from the Edo branch of the Hōjōji school, signed by Kunimasa, with an ubu tang, NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken paper, koshirae and shirasaya.
Katana signed 法城寺但馬守橘国正 (Hōjōji Tajima no Kami Tachibana Kunimasa), a smith of the Edo branch of the Hōjōji school, active in Musashi province during the shintō period. According to the original seller, the school descends from Hōjōji Kunimitsu of Tajima, and Kunimasa ranks among its most representative masters. The blade, with a nagasa of 69.9 cm and a sori of 1.4 cm, is shinogi-zukuri with iori-mune, chū-kissaki and bōhi on both sides. The original seller describes a ko-itame jigane with abundant ji-nie and a suguha-based hamon with gunome and gunome-ashi, soft ko-nie and a deep, bright nioiguchi; the bōshi runs straight and turns back in ko-maru. The photographs show the straight hamon with gentle undulations. The tang is ubu, with katte-sagari file marks and a single mekugi-ana, as the photographs confirm. It comes with a shirasaya, a gold-foiled double habaki and an uchigatana koshirae with a dark red saya in ishime-textured lacquer; the photographs show an iron tsuba with lotus leaves and flower in relief, dragon menuki and a fuchi-kashira with clouds and a dragon in gold. NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken certificate no. 1026468, dated June 2026.

The score adds and subtracts points for each feature of the piece and has no ceiling: the highest in the catalogue today is 255. It is computed from the record, not from an opinion. The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
