The piece

Katana signed 肥前国忠吉 (Hizen no Kuni Tadayoshi), attributed by the original seller to the sixth generation, with a suguha hamon, Tokubetsu Hozon papers and a full mounting.

Katana of the Hizen school, signed 肥前国忠吉 (Hizen no Kuni Tadayoshi); the original seller attributes it to the sixth generation of this line of Saga swordsmiths. The blade has a nagasa of 69.7 cm (二尺三寸, ni-shaku san-sun) and, according to the original seller, a suguha hamon (直刃), the straight temper line typical of the school. The photographs show both sides of the full blade, with a moderate curvature and a chū-kissaki point. The tang appears continuous with its original tip, with a single mekugi-ana and the signature cut on one face. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken certificate, which does not appear in the photographs. The piece comes with a koshirae: a tsuka with white ito, a dark tsuba, brass fittings and a black lacquered saya with an orange sageo; the listing neither describes nor dates it, and its appearance suggests a recent mounting. The listing does not mention the condition of the blade.

The score adds and subtracts points for each feature of the piece and has no ceiling: the highest in the catalogue today is 255. It is computed from the record, not from an opinion. The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
