The piece

An exceptionally long katana (83.7 cm) by the first Musashi Daijō Korekazu of the Ishidō school, signed and papered NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken; with koshirae and shirasaya.

Katana by the first Musashi Daijō Korekazu, a smith of the Ishidō school. According to the original seller, he was born in Gamō District, Ōmi Province, trained in the Ōmi branch of the Ishidō school and later settled in Edo, where he competed with the finest smiths working in Musashi. The blade has a nagasa of 83.7 cm and a sori of 2.0 cm: an exceptionally long katana with restrained curvature, generous mihaba and kasane, and a slightly elongated kissaki. The original seller describes a refined jigane of fine masame flowing naturally, and a nie-deki gunome-midare hamon with kinsuji and abundant ko-ashi, the bōshi in midare; the close-ups in the photographs show the gunome-midare with its ashi. The tang, intact in the photographs, has two mekugi-ana and the signature 武蔵大掾左近是一 (Musashi Daijō Sakon Korekazu). The seller places it around the Manji era (1658–1661). It comes with a koshirae: a round iron tsuba pierced with bundled noshi, an iron fuchi with plant motifs in gold iroe, a kashira the seller tentatively gives as horn, and a black lacquered saya; the listing also declares a shirasaya. NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken paper (特別保存刀剣, Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken), issued in 2025.

The score adds and subtracts points for each feature of the piece and has no ceiling: the highest in the catalogue today is 255. It is computed from the record, not from an opinion. The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
