The piece

Ko-Bizen school katana retaining Hidezane's original signature as a gakumei, in shirasaya with sayagaki and NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken papers.

Katana attributed to Hidezane, a smith of the Ko-Bizen school who, according to the reference works cited by the original seller, was active around the Kenchō era (1249–1256). The blade is shinogi-zukuri with a high shinogi, a low iori-mune and a small kissaki; it measures 71.1 cm in nagasa with 1.6 cm of sori. According to the original seller, the jigane is ko-itame mixed with itame, partly nagare, with jifu-utsuri, thick ji-nie and chikei; the hamon combines ko-chōji, ko-midare, ko-gunome and notare, with hotsure, nijūba, ko-ashi, yō, kinsuji and sunagashi, and the bōshi runs almost straight with a small rounded kaeri. The tang is ō-suriage, with a kirijiri tip, kiri yasurime and three mekugi-ana; it preserves the original signature inlaid as a gakumei, 秀真 (Hidezane), which the photographs show in its panel. It has a double copper habaki with gold plating and an old polish. It is kept in shirasaya with a sayagaki by the expert Tanobe Michihiro, who places it in the Ko-Bizen tradition around Kenchō. It comes with NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken paper no. 153770, issued in 2009, recording it as gakumei Hidezane, den Ko-Bizen.

Strong points

  • Rare work by Hidezane, of the Ko-Bizen school of the early Kamakura period
  • Original signature preserved as a gakumei 秀真 (Hidezane)
  • NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken paper (no. 153770)
  • Shirasaya with sayagaki by Tanobe Michihiro
  • According to the original seller, a healthy blade with a well-preserved bōshi

Points to bear in mind

  • Ō-suriage tang: the blade has been heavily shortened and the signature is a relocated gakumei
  • No koshirae: offered in shirasaya only
  • The paper attributes the school as den (traditional) Ko-Bizen
  • Old polish, according to the original seller

The score adds and subtracts points for each feature of the piece and has no ceiling: the highest in the catalogue today is 255. It is computed from the record, not from an opinion. The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
