The piece
Signed ubu katana by the first-generation Echigo no Kami Kanesada, with NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon papers, a complete uchigatana-koshirae and a shirasaya.
Katana by Echigo no Kami Kanesada, first generation, a smith of Ōsaka (Settsu province) working in the tradition of the Yamato Tegai school in the early Edo period. According to the original seller, he trained under the first Iga no Kami Kanemichi and taught the second generation. The blade, in shinogi-zukuri with iori-mune and chū-kissaki, measures 71.5 cm in nagasa with 1.2 cm of sori. The original seller describes a ko-itame jigane with some visible grain and ji-nie, a high gunome midare hamon mixed with chōji, with a straight yakidashi, ko-nie and tama-yaki, and a straight bōshi turning back in ko-maru. The tang is ubu, with sujikai yasurime, an iriyamagata tip and one mekugi-ana, and bears the signature 越後守包貞 (Echigo no Kami Kanesada). The NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken paper (2021) attributes it to the shodai. It comes with an uchigatana-koshirae with a black roiro saya: a shakudō tsuba with an aoi leaf in gold inlay, inscribed Kan'ei 2 (1625) and Gotō Kenjō; heron menuki, rooster fuchi-kashira, kozuka and kōgai with cranes, and a tsuka with white same and cream ito. A shirasaya with sayagaki and a tsunagi are also included.

The score adds and subtracts points for each feature of the piece and has no ceiling: the highest in the catalogue today is 255. It is computed from the record, not from an opinion. The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
