The piece

Katana signed (菊紋) 丹波守吉道 (kikumon Tanba no Kami Yoshimichi), of the Kyoto Mishina school, with ubu tang, shirasaya and uchigatana-koshirae; Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken paper.

Katana signed (菊紋) 丹波守吉道 (kikumon Tanba no Kami Yoshimichi), from the Kyoto line of the Mishina school, Yamashiro province. The original seller attributes it to the sixth Kyoto generation (京六代, Kyō rokudai), places it in the mid-Edo period and notes that the smith forged swords for the Kansei imperial commission (寛政御剣, Kansei gyoken). The blade measures 62.2 cm in nagasa with 1.2 cm of sori, in honzukuri with iori-mune and a kasane of 0.61 cm. According to the original seller, the jigane is ko-itame mixed with masame, with ji-nie and chikei; the hamon is notare with gunome and pointed elements, with konie, ashi, yō, kinsuji and sunagashi, bright and clear. The photographs show an ubu tang with a single mekugi-ana and the signature beneath an engraved chrysanthemum on the omote. It comes in shirasaya and with an uchigatana-koshirae: black-lacquered saya ending in a shrimp-shaped fitting (海老, ebi), a pierced iron tsuba with plum branches and gold touches, and a double habaki. NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken paper, as declared by the original seller.

The score adds and subtracts points for each feature of the piece and has no ceiling: the highest in the catalogue today is 255. It is computed from the record, not from an opinion. The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
