The piece

Katana by Ōmi no Kami Tsuguhira of Musashi province, signed and dated Meiwa 7 (1770), with NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken papers, koshirae and shirasaya.

Katana by Ōmi no Kami Tsuguhira, a smith of Musashi province according to the original seller. The tang is ubu, with a single mekugi-ana, and bears the signature 藤田近江守藤原継平鍛 (Fujita Ōmi no Kami Fujiwara Tsuguhira kitau) and the date 明和七庚寅年八月吉日 (Meiwa shichinen kanoe-tora-doshi hachigatsu kichijitsu), the 8th month of Meiwa 7 (1770). According to the original seller, the blade measures 2 shaku 3 sun 3 bu (about 70.6 cm), with 1.5 cm of sori, a motohaba of 3.25 cm and a motokasane of 0.7 cm, and it has a gilt double habaki. The photographs show an undulating notare hamon and a medium kissaki. The blade comes with both a mounting and a shirasaya: the photographs show a koshirae with a black lacquered saya, an iron tsuba with an undulating surface, a tsuka wrapped in green silk over same, menuki, and fuchi-kashira carved with clouds, together with a wooden tsunagi. The original seller neither describes nor dates the mounting. The blade holds NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken papers and also retains an earlier Tokubetsu Kichō certificate from the same society.

The score adds and subtracts points for each feature of the piece and has no ceiling: the highest in the catalogue today is 255. It is computed from the record, not from an opinion. The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
