The piece
Katana signed by Kawachi no Kami Kunisuke of Settsu, shintō period, with NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon papers, a complete koshirae with signed fuchi-kashira, and a shirasaya.
Katana by Kawachi no Kami Kunisuke, a smith of Settsu province (Ōsaka) in the shintō period. The original seller places it in the Manji era (1661) and presents it as the work of a Kunisuke also known as the “shintō ichimonji”. The blade has a nagasa of 70.4 cm and a sori of 1.1 cm, with a motohaba of 3.05 cm and a sakihaba of 2.25 cm, and is fitted with a one-piece gold-foiled habaki. The tang is ubu with a single mekugi-ana, as the listing states and the photographs confirm, and bears on the omote the signature 河内守国助 (Kawachi no Kami Kunisuke). It comes with a complete koshirae: black lacquered saya, openwork tsuba, tsuka with dark wrapping over same, menuki and fuchi-kashira; according to the original seller, the fuchi-kashira is signed and of good quality. A shirasaya is also included, shown in the photographs together with the wooden tsunagi that occupies the mounting. The NBTHK certified it as Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken on 25 December 2003. The listing says nothing about the condition of the blade.

The score adds and subtracts points for each feature of the piece and has no ceiling: the highest in the catalogue today is 255. It is computed from the record, not from an opinion. The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
