The piece

Signed katana by the first Dewa no Kami Yukihiro of Hizen, with a suguha hamon, ubu tang, shirasaya, han-dachi koshirae and an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken certificate.

Katana by Dewa no Kami Yukihiro, first generation, one of the most representative smiths of the Hizen school in the early Edo period. According to the original seller, he was the grandson of the first Tadayoshi and the younger brother of the first Kawachi Daijō Masahiro, received the title Dewa no Kami in 1663 and also learned to forge with Dutch steel, hence the Oranda-kitae addition to the signature. The blade is shinogi-zukuri with an iori-mune and chū-kissaki, with a nagasa of 63.4 cm and a sori of 1.4 cm. The seller describes a ko-itame jigane with fine ji-nie and chikei, a suguha hamon of even ko-nie with a bright nioiguchi, and a straight bōshi with a round turn-back. The tang is ubu, with sujikai yasurime and a single mekugi-ana, as the photographs confirm, and is signed 一文字出羽守行廣阿蘭陀鍛 (Ichimonji Dewa no Kami Yukihiro Oranda-kitae). It comes with a shirasaya, a one-piece gold-foiled habaki and a han-dachi koshirae whose saya is covered in black-lacquered grained leather, with iron fittings decorated with clouds and waves picked out in gold, an iron tsuba with a gilt rim and a kōgai with a dragon. NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken certificate.

The score adds and subtracts points for each feature of the piece and has no ceiling: the highest in the catalogue today is 255. It is computed from the record, not from an opinion. The mounting starts from what is known of its period, adds what vouches for it (its own NBTHK paper, a signed fitting, a crest) and subtracts what has been restored (saya, ito, same, habaki or sageo).
