The piece
Shibuichi kozuka with pine and crescent moon in takabori and gold, signed on the edge 義親 (Yoshichika), Tsuchiya school, late Edo period.
Kozuka signed on the upper edge 義親 (Yoshichika), a metalworker of the Tsuchiya school active in the late Edo period; according to the original seller, he was a pupil and adopted heir of the sixth Yasuchika. The subject is pine under the moon (松月図, shōgetsu-zu): on a polished shibuichi ground of silvery grey tone, a pine branch carved in takabori, its needles chiselled one by one and touched with gold, stands against a crescent moon inlaid in flat gold. The back plate shows a standing crane drawn in katakiribori and kebori with fine plumage detail. The end is capped in gold. The photographs show a stable patina with a few slight dark spots on the edge and light wear to the gold of the end cap, with no dents or cracks. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper, which does not appear in the photographs. Declared dimensions: 84.4 × 12.7 × 4.3 mm. It comes in a wooden box with a fabric-lined interior.
