Description

Kozuka signed on the reverse 濱野直壽 (Hamano Naotoshi) with kaō, the work of a Hamano school master who, according to the original seller, trained under Hamano Naoyuki, a pupil of Hamano Noriyuki. The subject is an 枝柿図 (edagaki-zu), a persimmon branch bearing two fruits: the branch starts towards one end and runs on as a fine line towards the other, among leaves with engraved veins. The photographs show a shakudō ground with very even nanako, the fruits in gold with a finely stippled skin, and the leaves and branch in oborogin, a variety of shibuichi, applied as high-relief suemon; the paper describes it as 赤銅魚子地 (shakudō nanako-ji), 朧銀据文 (oborogin suemon) and 金色絵 (kin iroe). The original seller points out that both persimmons are shown with the calyx facing upwards, the opposite of how they hang in nature, and reads this as a deliberate conceit of the maker. Condition is good: crisp nanako, intact gold and a dark, even patina; the plain reverse shows a few fine scratches and the ends small marks of use. It measures 9.7 × 1.5 cm according to the seller. It comes with an NBTHK 特別保存刀装具 (Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu) paper dated 10 April 1998, which accepts the signature, and is presented in a paulownia box lined with fabric.
