The piece
Shakudō nanako kozuka with waterside birds in takabori and gold iroe, a silver reverse with a flock of cranes, signed 後藤法橋一乗 (Gotō Hokkyō Ichijō) with kaō.
Kozuka signed on the spine 後藤法橋一乗 (Gotō Hokkyō Ichijō) with his kaō. Gotō Ichijō (1791–1876), regarded as the last great master of the Gotō family, used this signature after receiving the honorary title of hokkyō in 1824 and before his elevation to hōgen in 1863. The front, on a fine and even shakudō nanako ground, shows in takabori with iroe a shoreline with silvery waves, golden reeds and four wading birds, two standing by the water and two in flight, with gold beaks and legs. The reverse is a silver plate covered with a flock of cranes in flight, cut in katakiribori and kebori with great fluency. The photographs show crisp nanako, well-preserved relief and the gold intact on the high points; the silver of the reverse has a soft patina with some light rubbing. The original seller gives dimensions of 9.66 × 1.44 cm and declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon certificate, which does not appear in the photographs.
