Description

Fuchi-kashira signed by Ishiguro Koretsune, a pupil of Ishiguro Masatsune and a member of the Ishiguro school, one of the great metalwork workshops of the late Edo period. The subject is 金時追儺図 (Kintoki tsuina-zu): on the kashira, a red-faced Sakata no Kintoki holds the box of beans used in the rite of driving out demons; on the fuchi, an oni flees among scattered gold beans, beside golden leaves at one end. The ground is shakudō with fine, even nanako, and the figures are worked in takabori with gold and red copper inlays (zōgan and iroe). The signature, 石黒是常 (Ishiguro Koretsune) with kaō, is engraved on the copper plate of the fuchi. The photographs show the set in good condition: crisp nanako, a dark and even patina, well-preserved gilding and light marks of use on the fuchi plate. The NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper, no. 2005851, dated 27 August 2019, describes it as 赤銅魚子地 高彫 象嵌色絵 (shakudō nanako-ji takabori zōgan iroe) and accepts the signature. It comes in a wooden box with a cushion.

Strong points

  • Signed 石黒是常 (Ishiguro Koretsune) with kaō, accepted by the paper
  • A narrative subject shared across both pieces: Kintoki and the fleeing oni
  • Shakudō with fine nanako, takabori, gold zōgan and iroe
  • NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper

Points to bear in mind

  • The photographs are small and do not allow the nanako or the condition to be judged in detail.
  • The copper plate of the fuchi shows light scratches from use.
