The piece

Shakudō tsuba with ishime ground depicting Kan'u (Guan Yu) and his guardian Shūsō (Zhou Cang) in takabori iroe, signed 壽苞齋美卿 (Juhōsai Yoshiaki) with kaō.

Tate-maru-gata tsuba in shakudō with an ishime ground, signed on the front 壽苞齋美卿 (Juhōsai Yoshiaki) followed by a kaō. Juhōsai Yoshiaki was a pupil of Ishiguro Masayoshi and excelled at figure subjects. The front shows Kan'u (Guan Yu) seated reading a scroll, with his loyal Shūsō (Zhou Cang) behind him holding the halberd, and mountains among clouds in the distance. Kan'u's face in red copper and Shūsō's fierce gaze with gold eyes are carved with great precision; the robes bear kebori patterns and the ribbons and plume are in gold. On the back, a stream winds past a rock with gold bamboo. The photographs show a deep black patina, intact gilding and only fine handling scratches on the seppa-dai. The original seller states 71.6 × 67 mm, 4.2 mm thickness at the seppa-dai, a paulownia box and an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper, which does not appear in the photographs.
