The piece

Iron tsuba signed 光貫 (Mitsunuki), of the Ōtsuki school, showing a hawk on an old pine in polychrome high relief of gold, silver, copper and shakudō. Late Edo period.

Tate-maru tsuba (slightly taller than wide) in iron with a polished ground, signed 光貫 (Mitsunuki) beside the central opening. According to the original seller, the maker also signed 大月 (Ōtsuki), came from Tajima province and worked in Kyoto within the circle of the Ōtsuki school. On the obverse a hawk perches on the branch of an old pine, glaring downwards; the trunk in reddish copper, the needles in gold and shakudō, and rocks and flowers dotted with gold and silver are worked in takabori with iroe and zōgan, while engraved waves run along the lower part. On the reverse the flowering rocks and the pine branch continue; the original seller describes a cave there in which a frightened monkey hides, an auspicious theme. Two small round openings flank the central opening. The photographs show a stable dark brown patina, with no active rust or visible damage, and well-preserved coloured metals. Declared measurements: 8.74 × 8.17 cm, rim thickness 0.42 cm, 187 g. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper, which does not appear in the photographs.

Strong points

  • Signed 光貫 (Mitsunuki), Ōtsuki school
  • Hawk on an old pine in polychrome takabori
  • Rich use of metals: gold, silver, copper and shakudō on iron
  • Composition continuing onto the reverse
  • Stable patina with no visible damage

Points to bear in mind

  • The Tokubetsu Hozon paper is declared by the original seller; it does not appear in the photographs.
  • A single photograph of modest resolution: the signature and the fine carving cannot be seen clearly.
  • Mitsunuki is a secondary craftsman of the Ōtsuki school, not one of its leading masters.
