The piece

Shakudō kozuka with a nanako ground and two facing beasts, one in gold and one in shakudō, signed by Gotō Mitsutomo, tenth head of the main Gotō line.

Kozuka signed on the reverse by Gotō Mitsutomo, known as Renjō, tenth head of the main line of the Gotō school. According to the original seller he was born in 1628, succeeded to the house in 1652 and travelled between Kyoto and Edo before settling his workshop in Edo. The face, in shakudō with a fine, even nanako ground, sets a tiger against a leopard: one in gold, lying down and turning its head, its coat dotted with engraved rings; the other in black shakudō, leaping forward with its tail raised. Both are worked in takabori with dense kebori, with real volume and expression, following the school's traditional theme in a livelier composition. The top edge is gilt, and the reverse, in polished shakudō with a gold band that the seller describes as kin waritsugi, carries the signature cut with a firm chisel. The photographs show a crisp nanako and intact gilding, with only a few specks and fine scratches on the reverse. Length 95.5 mm, width 14 mm, according to the seller, who presents it in a paulownia box and declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper that is not photographed.
