The piece
Iron tsuba signed Hirochika, of the Uchikoshi school of Mito, depicting the hermit poet Rin Nasei and his crane in takabori with gold, silver and copper inlay.
Iron tsuba of tate-maru-gata shape (round, slightly taller than wide), signed 弘親 (Hirochika) on the reverse beside the central ana. According to the original seller, Hirochika belonged to the Uchikoshi school of Mito, in Hitachi province, was a pupil of Hirotoshi and also worked in Edo. The obverse shows Rin Nasei (Lin Bu), the hermit poet of the Song dynasty who lived in retreat by the West Lake with his cranes and plum trees: the sage, standing with a silver scroll, looks at a seated child among objects scattered on the ground while a crane swoops down from above; to the right stands a pine with engraved needle clusters. The reverse continues the scene with pine branches, rocks and a river rendered in fine lines, dotted with gold grasses. The photographs show takabori on iron with zōgan and iroe in gold, silver and copper, and kebori on the needles and the water. The visible condition is good: sound iron surface, complete inlays and no noticeable knocks. The original seller states an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper, which does not appear in the photographs. It measures 72.5 × 69.4 mm, 5.5 mm thick at the seppa-dai, and comes in a paulownia box.
