The piece
Matching unsigned kozuka and kōgai in shakudō with a bamboo-mat ground and a gold plum branch with narcissus, attributed to the Kaga-Gotō school by a Tokubetsu Hozon paper.
A futatokoro consisting of a kozuka and a kōgai made as a pair. Neither piece is signed; the NBTHK paper attributes them to the Kaga-Gotō school, the branch of the Gotō family that worked in Kaga province in the service of the Maeda lords. The paper titles the set "plum branch with narcissus" and describes the ground as shakudō in bamboo-mat pattern with a gold emblem. The photographs show the deep black shakudō, worked in fine ribs imitating a bamboo mat, on which each piece carries a raised gold spray: a flowering plum branch tied with long narcissus leaves, the blossoms, knot and buds finished with fine chiselled lines. The frames, the back of the kozuka and the body of the kōgai are of gilt-coloured metal with diagonal file marks. Condition is good: even patina, crisp relief and only small spots and rubbing along the edges. NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu paper no. 2004084, February 2017. According to the original seller, the set is kept in a paulownia box.
