Description
A kozuka from the main Gotō line, attributed to Gotō Tsūjō, the eleventh head of the family. The back plate carries an attribution kiritsuke-mei, 通乗作 光美 花押 (Tsūjō saku Mitsuyoshi kaō), cut later by Gotō Mitsuyoshi, a subsequent head of the same line. The plate is shakudō with a fine, even nanako ground; Mount Fuji rises from it in takabori, its snowy summit in white metal, with two pines with gilt crowns in iroe at the foot of the slope. The composition is restrained and lets the ground breathe, very much in the official Gotō taste. The photographs show an even black patina, intact gilding on the pines and edges, and crisp nanako; the back shows fine wear scratches. NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu paper no. 2009390, dated 4 April 2023, describes the piece as a kozuka with Fuji and pines in shakudō nanako, takabori and iroe, and records the inscription; it is also accompanied by an older Tokubetsu Kichō Kodōgu paper from 1964. Presented in a paulownia box.
