The piece
Shakudō kozuka with a nanako ground and two gold oxen in high relief, unsigned and attributed to Gotō Renjō, tenth master of the main Gotō line.
Unsigned (mumei) kozuka attributed to Gotō Renjō, tenth master of the main line of the Gotō school, whose workshops were active in Kyoto and Edo. It depicts a pair of oxen on the move, a traditional Gotō subject that may allude to the a-un pairing. The plate is black shakudō with a fine, even nanako ground; the two solid gold figures are modelled in takabori and set as suemon, with the hair, horns, ropes and tail detailed in fine kebori. According to the original seller, the reverse has a gold-covered plate; it measures 97 × 14.7 mm and comes in a kiri box. The photographs show the gold with good lustre, crisp chiselled detail and an intact nanako, with slight wear to the gilding along the edges. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper, which does not appear in the photographs.
