The piece
Complete set of sword fittings with the millet-ear (awaho) motif, signed by Araki Tōmei and designated Jūyō Tōsōgu at the 65th NBTHK session.
A matched set of fittings, 粟穂図揃金具 (awaho-zu soroi kanagu), comprising a tsuba, a kozuka, a fuchi-kashira, a pair of menuki, a kurikata and an uragawara, all decorated with ears of millet, the motif with which Araki Tōmei is identified. Born in Kyōto in 1817, he trained under Gotō Tōjō and later Gotō Ichijō, and studied drawing with a local painter. The tsuba, of polished iron in kuidashi shape with a rounded rim, bears the millet in takabori with gold, silver and shibuichi inlays, and a small bird at the top; the kozuka is shakudō nanako with gold, shakudō and copper in iroe; the fuchi-kashira, kurikata and uragawara are iron inlaid with gold, and the menuki are carved in solid gold. The tsuba, kozuka and fuchi are signed 吟松亭東明 (Ginshōtei Tōmei) with kaō; the menuki carry a wari-tanzaku-mei signature, the kurikata is signed 東明 (Tōmei) and the uragawara is mumei, attributed to Tōmei by the paper. The photographs show an even patina and intact gilding. The Jūyō Tōsōgu paper no. 14545, dated 7 November 2019, places the set at the end of the Edo period and praises the mastery of the millet carving.

- Small tsuba (5.6 × 4.05 cm)
