The piece
Set of kozuka, kōgai and menuki with a floral theme in shakudō nanako with gold and silver iroe, signed by Gotō Mitsuaki and with an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu paper.
Mitokoromono (三所物, mitokoromono), a set of kozuka, kōgai and a pair of menuki, by Gotō Mitsuaki of the Gotō school. The kozuka and kōgai bear on their gilt backs the signature 後藤光晃 (Gotō Mitsuaki) with kaō, and the menuki are signed on the edge with 光 (Mitsu) and 晃 (Aki). The theme is floral (花卉図, kaki-zu): chrysanthemums and other flowers with their stems and leaves, carved in takabori on a shakudō nanako ground and enhanced with gold and silver iroe; the shakudō menuki are carved in yōbori with the same colours. The photographs show a set in very good condition: an even black shakudō patina, crisp nanako and intact gilding on the high points and on the backs. The NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu paper (no. 2000246, 28 June 2012) attributes the set to Gotō Mitsuaki. According to the original seller, it comes in a paulownia box.
