The piece

Polished shibuichi fuchi-kashira with Hotei and karako in high relief, gold and silver, signed 濱野直随 (Hamano Naoyuki) with kaō.

Fuchi-kashira of the Hamano school, signed on the tenjō of the fuchi 濱野直随 (Hamano Naoyuki) followed by his kaō. Hamano Naoyuki trained under Nakamura Naonori and later under the first Hamano Noriyuki, and worked in several provinces before dying in Shinano. The subject is Hotei with karako. On the kashira, Hotei laughs with one hand on his head and his arm resting on his sack, carved in takabori with the robe engraved in kebori and inlaid gold cords. The front of the fuchi shows two karako among finely chiselled palm fronds, their faces in silver, as the photographs show and the original seller notes. The reverse bears Hotei's fan in a dark metal, probably shakudō, and his staff with a gold tassel. The ground is polished shibuichi (migaki) with a warm, even patina. The photographs show good condition, with a few light marks on the back of the fuchi. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu paper, which does not appear in the photographs.
