Description
An unsigned kozuka which the NBTHK paper attributes to the Gotō school of the Momoyama period. The Gotō worked for successive rulers over many generations, and their formal style, iebori, was the one used on ceremonial mounts. The subject, 守袋二疋獅子図 (morifukuro nihiki shishi-zu), shows two shishi, the guardian lions, playing with ribbons around a round protective pouch, the morifukuro, an auspicious motif. The plate is shakudō with a fine, regular nanako ground; the central motif is worked in takabori and heightened with gold iroe, and the front is framed by a gilt border. The back is a plain gilt plate. The photographs show a deep, even blue-black patina, the gold preserved on the raised areas and fine handling scratches on the back, with no visible rust or knocks. The Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu paper, number 2010922, is dated 26 September 2024 and describes the piece as shakudō nanako-ji, takabori and iroe. According to the original seller it measures 9.6 × 1.5 cm, weighs 38 g and comes in a wooden box.
