Description

Fuchi-kashira signed on the tenjō of the fuchi 光則 (Mitsunori), followed by his kaō. The original seller associates the maker with the Jochiku school and places him in the late Edo period. The theme is tsuki ni kari, wild geese and the moon, a long-established autumn motif. On the fuchi, a goose carved in takabori in dark shibuichi, with an inlaid eye, crosses a field divided diagonally between gold and shibuichi; on the kashira, a crescent moon in relief cuts across the oval, split in the same way between the two metals. The paper describes the technique as gold and shibuichi kezuri-tsugi on a nekogaki file-mark ground, with takabori, zōgan and iroe; the photographs show the swift striations of the ground, which give the gold the sheen of brushstrokes. In the photographs the shibuichi keeps a dark, nuanced patina, the gold shows light rubbing on the inner rims of the fuchi and kashira, and no knocks or cracks are visible. The piece carries NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu paper no. 2007554, dated 14 July 2021, which accepts the signature. It is kept in a wooden box with no visible inscription.
