Description

A fuchi-kashira signed on the tenjō of the fuchi 一喜(花押) (Kazuki kaō). According to the original seller, Kazuki worked in the late Edo period within the circle of Ōmori Teruhide, founder of the Ōmori school. The subject is the Manzai, a street performance that brought good fortune at the New Year. On the fuchi, Tayū, with a fan and a black hat, trades words with Saizō, who plays a small drum; on the kashira a laughing figure strikes another drum, so the scene runs from one part to the other. The ground is polished shibuichi. The figures are in high relief, with inlays of red copper for the faces, gold for the bag and details, and silver for the drumheads; the shitodome are gilt. The photographs show a warm, even patina, fine wear scratches on the plain surfaces and complete inlays. The NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu paper, no. 220205, dated 6 October 1989, accepts the signature and describes the work as 朧銀磨地 高彫色絵 (oboro-gin migaki-ji takabori iroe). According to the original seller, the piece comes in its wooden box.
