The piece
Shakudō kozuka with a dense kai-zukushi (assembly of shells) in gold relief on nanako, framed by gold hira-zōgan waterweed; signed 春秀 (Haruhide) with kakihan.
Kozuka signed on the reverse 春秀 (Haruhide), with his kakihan, a kinkō active in the late Edo period. The front shows a recessed panel with a kai-zukushi, a crowded assembly of sea shells: whelks, scallops, abalone, a sea urchin and a large murex at the centre, in high gold relief applied with the uttori technique, over a shakudō ground of very fine nanako with chiselled water ripples. The ends, of polished shakudō, carry lightly drawn waterweed in gold hira-zōgan. According to the original seller, the shell plate is an older work that Haruhide remounted in this kozuka, adding the waterweed of the frame; the contrast between the archaic relief and the fine zōgan makes this visible. The photographs show the gilding intact, a deep black shakudō patina and only fine wear scratches on the polished reverse. Stated dimensions: 116.7 × 20 mm. It comes in a paulownia box without inscription. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper, which does not appear in the photographs.
