The piece

Yamagane tsuba with a nanako ground, carved in takabori with rats, rice bales and grapevines highlighted in gold iroe; attributed by the original seller to the Ko-Kinkō school of the Muromachi period.

Unsigned (mumei) tsuba of tate-maru-gata form, a vertical oval, measuring 82 × 74 mm and 3.5 mm thick at the seppa-dai according to the original seller, who attributes it to the Ko-Kinkō school and places it in the Muromachi period. The plate is yamagane, a copper of deep brown tone, with a nanako ground punched in vertical rows and a beaded cord encircling the seppa-dai, features typical of early soft-metal work. Over this ground, in takabori, rats in lively and varied poses are scattered among rice bales, bunches of grapes with their leaves and tendrils, flowers and fruit: a theme of abundance and prosperity repeated on both faces, framed by a plain rounded rim. The photographs show touches of gold iroe on several rats and on the ties of one rice bale, now rubbed on the high points. The condition reflects wear from use consistent with its age, with gold worn from the raised areas and fitting marks along the edges of the central opening, and no cracks or active corrosion visible. It is kept in a paulownia box with a fitted recess. The original seller declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper, which does not appear in the photographs.
