The piece

A pair of unsigned Ko-Gotō menuki of the Momoyama period, in shakudō with wheel-arranged aoi leaves overlaid in gold and silver dewdrops.

A pair of unsigned menuki attributed to the Ko-Gotō school, the early phase of the Gotō lineage that dominated precious-metal work for the warrior class. The subject is aoi-guruma: hollyhock (aoi) leaves grouped in a wheel within an elongated composition, with stems and tendrils evoking a natural thicket. Each piece is worked in black shakudō in katachibori, with generous openwork between the tendrils; the main leaves are covered with gold foil (fukurokise), and small inlaid silver dewdrops enliven the surface over an irregular granulated ground in the manner of nanako. The photographs show a deep, even black patina, the gold almost complete with fine scratches and a few rubbed edges, and on the reverse the in-yō roots (ne), one hollow and one with a stub, along with greenish deposits on the inner face. The original seller notes that the lower edge appears slightly filed down and places the pair in the Momoyama period, possibly even late Muromachi. According to the original seller, the pair carries an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper and a paulownia box; the paper does not appear in the photographs. Stated length: about 3.7 cm.
