The piece
Shakudō nanako kozuka showing Hotei reclining on his sack in takabori with gold iroe, attributed to Gotō Teijō by the engraved kiwame of Gotō Mitsutoshi.
Kozuka of the Gotō school, the principal line of metalworkers in the service of the shōgun. The back plate bears the engraved inscription 程乗作 光壽 (Teijō saku Mitsutoshi), followed by Mitsutoshi's kaō: it is not the maker's signature but an attribution (kiwame) by Gotō Mitsutoshi, eleventh head of the family, assigning the work to Gotō Teijō, the ninth head, active in the mid-17th century. It depicts Hotei leaning against his large sack, holding the hōju jewel, his staff cast aside, the theme known as Tsukimi Hotei. The ground is shakudō with very fine, regular nanako; the figure is in takabori with iroe, the sack has a granular surface scattered with gold kirimon, and the staff is gold. The reverse is polished shakudō with a diagonally joined band of gold (kin wari-tsugi), and the top edge is sheathed in gold. The photographs show crisp nanako, an even patina and relief without noticeable wear; the gold on the reverse shows the fine scratches typical of its finish and of use. The original seller gives dimensions of 96.5 × 14.2 mm and declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper, which is not photographed. It comes in a custom-made paulownia box.
