The piece

Unsigned shakudō tsuba with autumn grasses in very high relief and gold iroe on nanako, attributed to the Mino school and dated to the early Edo period.

Unsigned tsuba attributed by the original seller and its declared paper to the Mino (美濃, Mino) school, on the theme of autumn grasses (秋草図, akikusa-zu). The plate is shakudō, in mokkō form with four deep indentations, over a fine nanako ground. Chrysanthemums, bush clover (hagi) and grass spikes intertwine like a karakusa scroll in very high sukidashi takabori, with gold iroe on flowers, buds and leaves and finely engraved veins. The rim is clad in gold plates chiselled with karakusa on nanako. The photographs show crisp, complete carving, an even black patina and bright gold with no apparent losses; the seppa-dai shows light wear from use with some reddish traces at the edges of the central opening, and there are small greenish deposits in a recessed area of the lower lobe. The original seller places it in the early Edo period, as a work following the ancient Mino-bori technique, and declares an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tōsōgu paper to Mino which does not appear in the photographs. Declared dimensions: 72 × 66 mm; 4.8 mm thick at the seppa-dai and 5 mm at the rim. It comes in a custom-made paulownia box.
