The piece
Shibuichi fuchi-kashira with wild boars among autumn grasses, in takabori with gold and copper iroe, signed by Kiryūsai Uchida Toshinori. Late Edo period.
Fuchi-kashira signed on the copper plate of the fuchi 起龍齋 内田壽則 (Kiryūsai Uchida Toshinori), with kaō. On the strength of the Uchida surname and the art name Kiryūsai, the original seller links the maker to the line of Uchida Sōmin. The theme is autumn grasses with wild boars: on the kashira two boars rest among hagi and susuki; on the fuchi the scene continues with a drowsing boar, flowering hagi sprays and a stream running past a bank with a stippled surface. The ground is shibuichi (oborogin) of a deep grey tone; the plants are in takabori with iroe in gold of several tones and reddish copper leaves, while the boars are in low relief, their bristles rendered in very fine kebori. The photographs show an even patina, intact relief and colour, and only a few tiny marks on the plain surface of the fuchi. Dimensions according to the seller: fuchi 38.3 mm, kashira 34 mm. Housed in a paulownia box. The seller states an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper, which does not appear in the photographs.
